Photography as Performance: Puncturing Perfectionism

How do we overcome the conundrum of acting for the camera, even while we’re taking a selfie? How do we forge a more authentic image of ourselves? It begins with recognizing how the act of being photographed alters our behavior. We begin to pose, maybe even preen, when we realize the lens is aimed at us. And when we’re the photographer, pointing the camera at ourselves, we are engaging in an even stranger bit of acting: performing for ourselves. Roland Barthes described the process of turning from a subject into an object. He wrote: “In front of the lens, I am at the same time: the one I think I am, the one I want others to think I am, the one the photographer thinks I am, and the one he makes use of to exhibit his art. In other words, a strange action: I do not stop imitating myself, and because of this, each time I am (or let myself be) photographed, I invariably suffer from a sensation of inauthenticity, sometimes of imposture.”57 Where does authenticity reside? How do we resist the tendency to become an imposter, to project a false image of ourselves for a perceived audience?
